Home insurance - tips & advice - contents insurance

The golden rule of home contents insurance is to make sure that you have enough cover – and that means working out exactly how much your possessions are worth.

To work out the value of your home contents, go through every room, adding up what the possessions in each are worth based on the current cost to replace each item. The Direct Line contents calculator is a really useful tool that can help you work this out.

Then you have to make sure that you have the right kind of cover. With Direct Line, not only are your household goods and items covered against a range of problems such as fire, flood, theft, escape of water and vandalism as standard, but you also get a whole range of additional benefits.

  • Cover for items temporarily moved to different accommodation – eg if your children go away to university for instance (up to  £5,000 or 15% of your contents sum insured)
  • Money in the home up to £500
  • The cost of alternative accommodation if you can’t live in your home while insured repairs are carried out (up to £10,000 or 25% of your contents sum insured)
  • Accidental breakage of home entertainment equipment (e.g. TV’s, stereos).
